At the southern-hemisphere we find the smallest continent, but the sixth largest country in the world. The continent separates the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific Ocean and the whole area is surrounded by ocean. The geographical coordinates is 27° S, 133° E. North of the continent we find neighboring countries such as Indonesia, East Timor and Papa New Guinea. To the east is the countries of Salomon Island, Vanuatu and New Caledonia located. And south-east we find New Zealand.
This huge country has a total area of 7, 741 220 square km. That can cover 95 % of the United States area, including all states. The Australia total area also includes two small islands, located far from the mainland. You have Lord Howe Island that is located far east and Macquarie Island located South-east, below New Zealand.

But let’s focus on the mainland and the wide variety of terrain. South-east in the continent, we find the Australian Alps that are mostly covered with snow and it include the highest point in the country: “Mount Kosciuszko” elevated 2 228 meter above sea. Apart from that most of the country is covered with large deserts. On the north side the terrain is mostly tropical forests, and south is covered mostly with temperate forests.

There is only 1% of the continent that includes water, and the largest lake is: “Lake Eyre” covering 9 500 square kilometers. The longest and most famous river is the “Murray river” in South Australia with a length more than 2 500 km.
